19 July 2019, Isleworth –

Isleworth & Syon School is celebrating the achievement of Year 8’s Mikaeel Shah after an extraordinary performance in the Junior Maths Olympiad (JMO), finishing as the eighth-best student in the whole country.

The Olympiad is organised by the UK Mathematics Trust (UKMT) and represents the final stage of the Junior Maths Challenge (JMC). Only the top 1000 students in the country qualify for this prestigious competition. Isleworth & Syon entered 70 students for the JMC and two qualified for the JMO.

Our top performer was Mikaeel, who dropped only 5 points in the competition to earn a score of 65/70. This benchmark won him the Gold award, only achieved by the top 30 students in the country. The qualifying mark for Gold was 59, so Mikaeel exceeded all expectations.

Headteacher Mr Ferguson commented, “This is an outstanding result for a student from a comprehensive school, besting students from the private sector. A hard-working and diligent student, Mikaeel has reaped the rewards and looks set to go far. In school, we are proud to develop and nurture students’ talents and allow them to express themselves on the biggest stages.”
