Miss Cox (English) and Miss Shukla (history) will once again be coordinating the Debate Mate club this year, starting after half term.

Debate Mate run after-school debating clubs and currently work in 266 primary and secondary schools throughout the UK. They featured in Sky 1’s ‘Kings and Queens of Speech’, which followed students on the programme. The club begins on Wednesday 7 November at Isleworth and Syon school. Students will learn the art of public speaking and how to debate in a formal setting. The club will be run by specially-trained university students and the techniques are delivered through a series of fun and interactive exercises and games. Students who have been on the programme see substantial increases in their speaking and listening skills, their engagement with school, and a range of students have been shown to benefit (and enjoy!) these clubs.

Last year, our students placed 30th in London after competing in the Urban Debate League. The top students are also invited to take part in various competitions throughout the year, including the Debate Mate Cup.
