On Friday 11 July 2014, the French department organised for fifty-nine French students in Years 7 and 8 to spend a day in Lille. After a 4.30am meet at the school, the cohort took the coach to Dover and then a ferry over to Calais. When the coach finally reached Lille, everyone was relieved to be able to finally stretch their legs. The group went for dinner at Restaurant Brasserie La Chicorée, where they gleefully tucked into a lovely lunch of chicken and chips, practising some of their French oral skills with the waiters.

Afterwards, the students were given some free time to investigate the streets of Lille and to practise their French skills further in the shops. They came back with a variety of treats, including comic books and even a football! The highlight of the day was a visit to a waffle factory in Houplines called La Gaufre du Pays Flamand. The boys were shown how waffles are made before being given some to take away. Everyone agreed that they were delicious! Then it was time for the long journey home. The party arrived back at Isleworth & Syon at 11.00pm, exhausted but fulfilled after a fantastic day.
