As part of the Key Stage 3 curriculum, the history department and the Holocaust Educational Trust gave Year 9 students the opportunity to listen to a talk with a Holocaust survivor, Mrs Janine Webber.

Janine was only was only a small child when she lost both parents in the German invasion of Poland. Now aged 81, Janine continues to give her time to tell students her incredibly emotive and affecting story. Year 9 were given the opportunity to ask questions in a special extended assembly. One asked Janine what inspired her to carry on, in the midst of the squalor and constant fear. Her response was poignant yet direct: “I wanted to survive.”

It was an experience that gave the boys a powerful and important lesson as they contemplated notions of discrimination and persecution both in the past and the present day.
