Matt Dickinson is a writer, filmmaker and explorer, who climbed to the top of Mount Everest in 1996. He became the first filmmaker to film on the summit and return alive, and he came into school on Tuesday 4 March to talk to students about his fascinating experiences.

Matt is also a successful author, having recently published a new series for children, ‘Mortal Chaos’. It was this that led to the second part of the event – a creative writing workshop, hosted in the Sixth Form Common Room. Thirty keen and enthusiastic readers and writers from Years 7 and 8 were hand-picked by their teachers to listen to Matt, as he discussed the importance of planning stories. Students were then given the opportunity to plan their own stories, using the framework that Matt uses. All the students involved agreed that the session was very successful, and they will take what they have learned to enhance their creative writing skills in lessons.

Many thanks go to Matt for giving his time, and to Ms Squires for organising this very helpful activity.
