Just before Christmas, students in Years 8 and 9 were visited by Irish author Darren Shan. The visit by the popular children’s writer was organised by the English Department. Darren specialises in writing horror, using ghoulish humour to tell gruesome stories about creatures such as vampires, demons and zombies. The latter forms the basis of his new series, ‘Zom-B’, from which Darren read extracts to his delighted and enthralled audience.

Afterwards, he answered questions put to him from the audience, and explained that his biggest influence was his mother, who encouraged a love of reading and storytelling from a very young age. He then took part in a book signing, with students happy to wait for up to an hour for the chance to speak to him. Darren was thrilled with the enthusiastic response he received from the students, describing them as “very welcoming and polite”. All involved had a truly devilish day!
