Appearance & Uniform Policy

Introduction

At Isleworth & Syon, we believe that all students should dress in a smart and professional manner. Uniform standards apply on journeys to and from school as well as their time on the premises; students in breach of the following appearance policy will be sent home to rectify the issue of concern.

The Senior Leadership Team are the sole arbiters of acceptable standards in all cases.

School Uniform

  • School Blazer with Badge.
  • School Tie (clip-on ties for Years 7 & 8) or Colours Tie when awarded.
  • Black School Trousers (Formal style – no canvas/ chino / jean style)
  • Plain, black belt if required.
  • White Shirt. (long- or short-sleeved)
  • Black Outdoor Shoes – preferably laced (no trainers / trainer-style / casual footwear / no boots. No logos / additional colours.)
  • Black V-Necked Sweater or Black V-Necked Tank Top. (optional)
  • Plain Dark Coloured Socks.
  • Plain Coat, if required (no denim / leather / suede; no hoodies / tracksuit tops or sports tops.)

Headwear

Headwear is not part of the school uniform and should never be worn inside the school building. Warm hats (not baseball caps) may be worn in winter when travelling to/from school. During extreme heat, sun hats may be worn around school and when travelling to/from school to protect from the sun.

Hairstyles

The school has very high standards for the uniform and appearance of its students. As part of this, we have clear expectations on the style of hair that is deemed appropriate for the school environment as set out below.

Hair should be conventional* in style and in length and should not be artificially coloured, “spiked” or contain styling products. Hairstyles must not impede a student’s vision or impede respectful eye contact, at any time. Excessively shaven hair, shaved eyebrows or any shaven step/lines/patterns/fashion trims are not acceptable. Neat and smart braiding is acceptable.

*Conventional = formal not casual, business-like/office standard dress/traditional – not related to any current musical, sporting or fashion trend.

The school reserves the right to the right to insist on re-styling if it considers the style inappropriate.

We recognise that changing hairstyles are part of modern everyday society. However, the school is a work environment for a large number of children and young adults who can be at a vulnerable stage of their life. It is our opinion that extreme styles are not appropriate in such an environment. We are also aware that many young people feel the need to conform to trends and that many parents do not wish their children to be in an environment where certain extreme trends are permitted and likely to be copied.

Jewellery/Ornaments

Students are not allowed to wear jewellery to school; the exception is one or two (separate ears) plain silver or gold earring(s).

Religious ornaments, we realise, are sometimes required to be worn. Students are welcome to do so where this is a compulsory requirement of their faith and as long as they are small, unobtrusive and not potentially dangerous in nature or misused in any way.

(Current guidance indicates that the vast majority of symbolic items/requirements for any faith are optional and therefore – as we are a non-denominational school – are not permitted within this policy.)

Make-Up

Students cannot wear make-up or nail varnish or have visible tattoos.

Physical Education

The following kit is compulsory for either PE or Games lessons:

PE Games
House Polo Shirt School Games Shirt
Black Shorts Black Shorts
White sport socks Red School Games Socks
Training Shoes / Astro Trainers Football / Rugby Boots

All students need to bring a towel for showering purposes and should either wear swimming trunks or athletic supports while participating in the lesson. Students unable to participate will be required to change into their kit and contribute to the lesson through observation, refereeing and other general duties.

Purchasing Uniform/Kit

All uniform and kit can be purchased from the School Shop, along with other useful school items. We also offer a ‘New To You’ service, offering pre-used items of school uniform or sports kit. Full prices lists are available at the link above.

The only items where we act as the sole supplier are:

  • School Tie
  • School Badge (should you wish to purchase your own blazer)
  • House Polo Shirt
  • School Games Shirt.

All other items are stock items available from a range of outlets. However, items sold in our shop are checked for quality and price and we trust that you will find that the service is excellent.

The Senior Leadership Team (SLT) are the final arbiters of the Appearance Code in all cases.
