Wider Learning Week - Year 7
Wider Learning Week (WLW) is one of our favourite weeks in school, as students come off their usual timetables to participate in enriching learning experiences—in both familiar and new contexts. Throughout the week, students are challenged, with activities designed to promote wider understanding and develop independence. Citizenship Day
During this fascinating and important carousel, students learned about being safe and civil in the community. This included talks from:
- More Life - discussing the dangers of vaping and smoking
- London Ambulance Service - a session about knife crime and what to do in an emergency
- Safer Communities - a scenario-based workshop exploring peer pressure and how to be a positive member of society
- Hype - discissing a variety of drugs and how to seek help if they need it.
Students learned a lot about staying safe and doing the right thing.
House Trips
Each Year 7 learned more about their house’s namesake through these trips led by House Leaders. This meant trips to:
- Adam: V&A Museum
- Brunel: Tour of the Grand Union Canal
- Shackleton: Osterley Park
- Turner: Tate Britain Museum
It helped students feel more connected to their community.
Medieval Sports
This history activity saw students designing their own coat of arms and learning about medieval sports like stoolball and medieval football - which shares similarities with modern-day gaelic football. They then got the chance to put this into practice out on the pitch by playing the historical sports - it was great fun!
Play in a Day
This immersive theatre experience asked students to uncover a conspiracy. Several staff members played roles, with students working together to solve problems and answer puzzles. It tested improvisational skills, as it all led to a performance at the end of the day.
Science Day
Students explored various scientific methods - they made their own energy drinks; learned about chemical reactions via an amazing iodine clock experiment; and discovered the aerodynamics of paper aeroplanes! It is safe to say that much fun was had by all.
