Urban Debate League Round 2

Urban Debate League Round 2

In January, our debating team competed in Round 1 of the Urban Debate League. As a reminder, throughout 2025-26 we are taking part in Debate Mate, an external programme where students receive weekly after-school debate tutoring from experienced facilitators. After an exciting round 1, students were ready to take part in round 2 at St Georges Catholic School in Maida Vale, London.

We were thrilled to take two teams, both containing students from across Key Stage 3 (Years 7-9). The motions for the two debates were:

  • This house believes that STAN culture has done more harm than good. (prepared motion)
  • This house believes that the UK government should fund every UK student to study abroad. (unprepared motion)

All students performed brilliantly, against some tough, more experienced opposition. Team A narrowly missed the win in both of their debates. Team B won their first and lost the second. It was a fantastic experience for the boys, who loved putting their training into practice. On the day, the mentors gave some brilliant feedback to help students develop their skills for the next competition in April: The Debate Mate Cup. Well done to the boys for representing the school so superbly!
