Science Cultural Capital Challenge - Autumn Term 1

Science Cultural Capital 1

"[Cultural capital] is the essential knowledge that pupils need to be educated citizens, introducing them to the best that has been thought and said and helping to engender an appreciation of human creativity and achievement.

- Ofsted

In school, we drive to constantly increase every student's "cultural capital", helping them to become more well-rounded citizens that are ready for the wider world. To that end, the science department organised an exciting challenge during the first half-term of the year. It was focused around Mary Anning, a young woman from a poor family who taught herself science on the beaches of Lyme Regis. She discovered the first complete fossil of an ichthyosaur at some point before 1836. Her find is now part of the collection at the Natural History Museum.

The Cultural Capital Challenge asked students, 'Can you find the ichthyosaur fossil?' The boys were asked to take a trip to the museum, take a photo with the fossil, and email it to the science team. You can see the results in the slideshow below - well done to every student who took part. The next challenge has been set this week and involves a famous London hotel - watch out for the results in the new year.
