Remembrance

In School

Tuesday 11 November was Armistice Day, a day of remembrance that marks the end of fighting in World War I. The day has subsequently become a chance for us to remember those who have given their lives in the world wars and conflicts since.

Mr Judge led poignant assemblies with all year groups, helping students connect the dots between the past and the present. Some Sixth Form student leaders spoke eloquently, telling students about former school students who died in World War I and reciting war poetry. At the end of each assembly, a pair of students laid a wreath in the school hall - to directly remember the 81 I&S students who died in World War I and the 71 that gave their lives in the Second World War. At 11.00am, the entire school came to a standstill for the nationally observed two-minute silence.

Before the assembly, House & Citizenship Ambassadors - partnered with Sixth Form students - sold poppies at break and lunchtimes. We will find out soon how much this effort raised for the Royal British Legion – thank you to everyone for their support.

Borough Road Memorial

Straight after the school assemblies on Armistice Day, another small group of students went to the local Borough Road memorial service. Sixth Form Deputy Head Students Ollie Gilmour and Jiya Mangat contributed readings to the service, while Ranveer Sehgal (Year 7) and Oscar Wilkins (Year 9) laid a wreath at the base of the memorial. Afterwards, we hosted local guests – including local MP Ruth Cadbury – back at school. All students behaved impeccably during this important series of events and were a credit to the school.

Isleworth 390 – Isleworth and Brentford Memorial

As well as the in-school assemblies, we were proud that students were invited to be a crucial part of several local community events. On Remembrance Sunday, a small group of I&S ambassadors represented us at two local memorial events as part of the Isleworth 390 project, commemorating each of the 390 Isleworth residents who died in the world wars.

One event took place in South Street, Isleworth; the other at Brentford Library. At both, our boys took part in a parade through the local streets, with each student wearing a sash bearing the name of an Isleworth resident who died during World War I. It was a poignant day, remembering those who sacrificed their lives. Our thanks go to the students involved. You can find out more about the Isleworth 390 project on their website.
