Practical Session with UCL Scientists

Practical Session with UCL Scientists

Our Year 7 science club has been very popular this year, with fantastic participation on Wednesdays after school. On 14 January, the science team hosted a special event, welcoming professional scientists from the Ivanovitch lab at University College London (UCL). Year 12 applied science students were also invited to this exciting session, to both give them a rare insight into how scientific research is carried out as well as showing what a career in biomedical science can look like. During the hour-long activity, the scientists:

  • Explained their current research in developmental biology
  • Discussed how embryological research contributes to medical advances
  • Conducted a practical on microscopy
  • Shared their personal journeys into science and research careers
  • Answered any questions about university pathways, research, and ethical considerations.

It was great to see students getting stuck in to the experiments, especially watching the Sixth Formers showing the Year 7s how it's done! A brilliant example of our 'learners as leaders' philosophy in action. The boys did a brilliant job with asking questions and were a credit to the school. We would like to thank the scientists for giving up their time to work with our young people; it was a brilliant celebration of science, as one Year 7 summarised aptly:

It was one of the best science clubs ever!
