Year 9 Summer Examinations
Wednesday 17 – Thursday 25 June

Please find below a list of the internal core examinations that your son/ward will sit this summer:

Individual Candidate Timetables

After half-term, your child will receive an individualised timetable which will show both the location where he will sit his examination and his personal seat reference number.

Examination Rules

Please note that for these examinations, we enforce the rules established by GCSE awarding bodies. This is to give students the opportunity to experience what is expected of them in public examinations and therefore prepare them for future examinations. The most important rule is that they cannot communicate in any way with other candidates, when entering, during and when leaving the examination. No mobile phones, smartwatches or any other potential technological sources of information are permitted in examinations. We will apply sanctions if students are not following the official JCQ examination regulations that are signposted on the school website. We will go through these rules in detail during assemblies and Study Support.

Examination Content

These can be found on the subject’s SharePoint or via the links below and on the next page. Students should ask their subject teacher if they have any questions or concerns. Students will need to log in to Office 365 to access these resources.

Mathematics	Students in sets 1 and 2 will take the higher tier paper; students in set 3 will sit the foundation tier paper. This examination will cover units 1-8, with a particular focus on units 7 and 8. To access the PLCs for Year 9 topics, click here for Foundation or here for Higher.
Science	All students will be required to complete a one-hour end of year examination that will be covering the new GCSE modules. Click here to access the PLC for the topics.

Revision

It is now absolutely vital that your son/ward revises over the May half-term holiday period as well as in the lead-up to his internal examinations. To support this expectation, your son/ward must follow a number of steps:

Quantity of Revision

Ensure that your son/ward revises daily over the holiday period. The amount might vary depending on family and personal commitments but ideally will be two hours a day and then for 60 minutes every school evening, depending on his homework commitments. If he hasn’t started revising already, it’s never too late to do so.

Quality of Revision

Your son/ward must use the range of active revision techniques which he has been taught. These techniques are outlined on the school website. Passive revision techniques such as simply reading and/or highlighting text are wholly ineffective. Also, encourage him to:

switch subjects and topics within subjects every 30 minutes; this is called interleaving and is a proven, highly effective technique to support long-term memory; and
revise in a public space (not in his bedroom) until he has developed some “earned trust”. Ask to view the evidence of his revision on a daily basis.

Examination Coverage

The internal examinations cover the full range of subjects. Given this, it is crucial that your son/ward does not just focus on his favourite subjects. Assessments in other subjects will take place in lessons at a time set by the class teacher.
