22 June 2026

Dear Parent/Carer,

Extreme Heat Warnings: Monday 22 - Friday 26 June

You will be aware that the projected temperatures for the rest of this week are possibly up to 39˚C. This is the second time a red Heat Health Alert (HHA) has been issued by the UKHSA, the first having been issued in July 2022.

A red HHA indicates that a severe heatwave could have impacts beyond health and social care with potential effects on transport systems, food, water, energy supplies and businesses, and indicates a risk to life for even the healthy population.

We are therefore informing you that we are making some changes at school so that your child’s education can continue in a safe manner.

The School Day

From Tuesday 23 to Friday 26 June:

  • School will start at the usual time of 8.25am.
  • School will finish early at 1.10pm, following afternoon registration at 1.00pm.

Since we are shortening the school day, students will need to use the canteen at break. A small amount of food will be available from 1.10pm.

At the end of the adapted school day, students will be given the instruction to go straight home. We would encourage parents/carers to reinforce this message with their children – unfortunately, young people die every year from drowning in hot weather as well as heat stroke and heat exhaustion.

Culture Evening – Thursday 25 June, 5.00 – 7.00pm

This event is cancelled.

Track and Field Championships – Friday 26 June

This whole-school event is postponed, so Friday 26 June will be a usual school day (as above). The Track and Field event is currently planned to be re-scheduled to Friday 3 July

School Uniform – Adaptions (Year 7 to 12)

Students have the following choices on each day. They can wear, either:

  • PE Kit: House Polo Shirt (not a games shirt) and school PE shorts or plain black sports shorts (no other sports kit will be acceptable). Footwear will need to be PE socks and trainers.
  • School Uniform, no blazers or ties (as per today), including black school shoes.

All students will be allowed to wear a cap/hat when on site and outside the school building.

Internal Examinations

These important assessments will continue. Please note that all afternoon assessments on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday will now be re-scheduled:

  • Year 10 and 12 afternoon examinations will move to Friday 26 June.
  • Year 7 will be informed separately about their arrangements.

Work for the Remainder of the School Day

We are sorry that students are missing their period 5. We would expect students to continue with their revision for the internal examinations and tests, as well as reading for pleasure. You can also access some further support for work

Hydration

We continue to encourage all students to bring their own reusable water bottle. This is so that students can remain hydrated throughout the school day as well as on their journey to and from school.

Further Adaptions

When students are in classrooms, we will do our very best to ensure that teaching spaces are well ventilated and shaded. In addition, PE/games lessons will not include energetic activities. At breaktime, active play will not be permitted.

Monday 29 June and Onwards

Unless the weather forecast changes over the next few days, we plan to return to the normal school timetable and expectations next week.

If there are any significant changes over the coming days, or guidance is issued that requires a change to our planned arrangements, we will communicate further with parents/carers.

Thank you for your continued support and understanding.

Yours faithfully,

Simon Fisher and Jo Higginbottom
Co-Headteachers
