BBC Bitesize Careers Talk

BBC Talk

Last week, we took part in a unique and exciting careers opportunity, as BBC Bitesize Careers came in to school for a full morning of talks. Across four periods, the BBC team spoke to Years 7-11, led by Radio 1 Xtra DJ Fee Mak and featuring three panellists from industry. We were one of only a handful of Hounslow schools to secure this prestigious roadshow, which was run in conjunction with Technicians We Make the Difference.

The interactive talks were adapted slightly to suit the audience. Students in Years 7 & 8 received a broad careers overview, introducing them to the huge spectrum of different careers available in the UK. The more senior year groups received more specific information about pathways and choices, including some fascinating advice on identifying your own skills and selling yourselves in a hugely competitive job market. The three panellists were all from the local area and spoke about their own experiences – as part of the EasyJet graduate scheme, taking part in a social media apprenticeship at the BBC, and working as a laboratory technician at Great Ormond Street possible.

The highlight of the day was the question-and-answer rugby ball, which contained a microphone and was passed through the crowd to ask questions. We were very impressed with the boys’ thoughtful queries. Students loved the day, with the overwhelming consensus being that the day was a huge amount of fun!
