'Lit Happens' A Level Conference

When students reach the Sixth Form, a greater emphasis is placed on self-discipline and taking responsibility for their own learning. Honing the ability to study well is a key trait once students reach their A levels or level 3 vocational courses. With that in mind, the English team organised an exciting trip for Year 12 literature students on Tuesday 7 October.

Students did not have to travel far – just down the road, to The Green School for Girls. They were invited to take part in a literature conference called ‘Lit Happens’, which brought together 150 students from across 13 Hounslow secondary schools for a fun day of literary exploration, discussion, and collaboration. The event featured a keynote talk from a university professor, who offered valuable insights into the study of English Literature at higher education level. The professor discussed how reading, analysis, and interpretation evolve in university study, and inspired students to think critically about the ways literature shapes — and is shaped by — its time. The day also included a range of breakout sessions and workshops led by A-Level English teachers. Students learned key skills like critical reading, analytical writing and examination preparation – as well as learning from subject experts and collaborating with their peers.

Students loved this trip! One said,

I found it extremely interesting and insightful. It gave me new perspectives on certain techniques especially metaphors and it helped me understand how to write essays better. I also learned some really interesting context on certain periods and texts.
