Isleworth & Syon’s round 1 representatives!

We were delighted to receive notice this week that Isleworth & Syon School placed fifth in the country for debating after round 1 of the Urban Debate League, which took place on Wednesday 25 January at Chiswick School. The boys were also ranked as the third-best school in London.

The group of fourteen students – listed below – did an outstanding job during the two debates, winning both! The first motion was ‘This house would punish parents for the acts of their children’, while the second was ‘This house would ban beauty contests’. These were potentially tricky topics, but the boys really rose to the occasion; Miss Cox and Miss Shukla, coordinators of the team, were both extremely impressed with the students’ professionalism throughout.

Our Debate Mate club – taking place on Tuesdays – has been extremely well-attended all year, with over seventy students attending the first session. Each week, representatives from the Debate Mate organisation come into school and teach the students about the art of public speaking and debating, with a particular focus on how to articulate your points to beat the competition. It is always such a pleasure to see how committed and enthusiastic the students are when it comes to debating – this year has been no different!

Round 2 of the League is scheduled for Monday 27 February at Alec Reed Academy. We look forward to seeing how the group get on!

The fourteen students who represented the school in Round 1 were: Bilal Bukhari (10C), Isa Khan (10C), Jack Miller (9E), Ali Nasiri (10F), James Pusey (10E), Benjamin Rawsthorne (8A), Armaan Sachdeva (8C) and Daniel Vakili (10F).
